Heatstroke
If dogs get too hot and are unable to reduce their body temperature by panting, they will develop heatstroke - which can kill.
Signs of heatstroke;
-Heavy panting
-Excessively drooling
-The dog appears lethargic, drowsy or uncoordinated
-Collapsed or vomiting
Here are a few TOP TIPS to avoid heatstroke;
- Try to avoid taking your dog on walks when it's too hot, try to take them early in the morning or early evening when the sun is going down. Also avoid strenuous activities.
-Be aware of hot pavements, especially during the daytime, try to keep to the shade as much as possible. If the pavement is too hot for your hand to touch then it's too hot for your pups paws!
-When indoors try keeping your curtains closed, and find cool areas, areas with tiles or even cooling mats!
-If your pet is too hot cool them down by wetting their paws or ears
-Hydration is so important, make sure to keep their water bowl filled up, you can even add ice cubes to cool it down!
- Make sure to regularly groom your dog/ cat, dead or loose hair can actually make your pet feel hotter, so removing it will keep them cool!
-White cats, dogs and hairless breeds can easily become sunburnt, bare this in mind, you can buy pet safe sun cream or just take extra caution and keep them in shady areas
-Don't forget pets that are in hutches like hamsters and rabbits as they can get heatstroke too, make sure to move their cages to a shady area and keep their water bottles filled up
